Humana's CenterWell to open 23 clinics at Walmart stores

Humana's CenterWell is planning to open 23 clinics at Walmart locations in four states, the company announced Wednesday.

The health clinics will operate in space that previously held Walmart's own clinics, according to the announcement. CenterWell intends to have the locations across Florida, Georgia, Missouri and Texas fully equipped, staffed and opened by the first half of 2025.

The locations will operate under both the CenterWell and Conviva brands, providing senior-focused primary care. CenterWell is the fastest-growing senior-focused primary care provider in the nation, Humana said.

"We are excited by the unique opportunity to lease space from a world-class community partner such as Walmart and offer seniors in these four states greater access to our integrated approach to care,” said Sanjay Shetty, M.D., president of CenterWell, in the release. “These nearly two dozen primary care centers are specifically designed for seniors, and each location’s design, including dedicated entrances and easy parking, offers patients the access that they have come to expect at our clinics across the nation."

Financial terms of the lease were not disclosed. The centers are planned for metropolitan areas in Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville in Florida; Atlanta; Dallas-Fort Worth and Kansas City.

Walmart opened its first health clinics in 2019, and, over the course of several years, it established 51 locations across five states. The centers offered primary care, dental care, behavioral health and key lab services, all co-located with a Walmart store.

However, in April the retail giant pulled the plug on Walmart Health along with its virtual care business, saying the segment was not "sustainable." The company had previously been on track to open 75 locations by early 2025.

“We are looking forward to welcoming CenterWell into these purpose-built healthcare spaces to offer quality care to communities in four states,” said Brian Setzer, executive vice president of Walmart Health & Wellness, in the press release. “Leasing these spaces to a well-known and successful healthcare delivery organization is a win for customers and patients, as we continue to focus on our core health and wellness business of pharmacy and optical.”

CenterWell cared for about 318,000 seniors across 15 states in its 300 care centers as of March 31, Humana said.
