U.S. News & World Report Ranks John Muir Health’s Medical Centers among Bay Area and Nation’s Best

John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek Ranks in Top 50 nationally for Orthopedics and Digestive Disorders. Both Concord and Walnut Creek medical centers ranked in Top 3 overall in San Francisco Area.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- For the fifth consecutive year, John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek has been ranked one of the nation’s top hospitals by U.S. News & World Report in its annual list of America's Best Hospitals. John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek was ranked in the Top 50 in Orthopedics and Gastroenterology, making the medical center one of the top-ranked facilities on the West Coast in those specialties and the only non-academic medical center in northern California to appear in the Top 50.

In addition to the national rankings, U.S. News and World Report published metropolitan area hospital rankings for the San Francisco area, to identify high-performing local hospitals. John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek is listed at #2 and John Muir Medical Center, Concord at #3 out of all 45 hospitals surveyed. In total, the two hospitals had 19 services nationally ranked or rated as high performing, including Cancer, Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Gynecology, Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and Urology.

“As we proudly celebrate the “Best Hospital” distinction and metro area rankings, we thank the entire John Muir Health family - our physicians, nurses, staff and volunteers - for their ongoing dedication to the health of our patients and the community,” said Jane Willemsen, president and chief administrative officer of John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek. “This recognition is a tribute to their talent, skills and commitment and affirms our dedication to providing outstanding care and an exceptional patient experience.”

“John Muir Health is dedicated to providing a range of high-quality services to the community so patients and families can stay close to home for all aspects of their care,” said Mike Thomas, president and chief administrative officer at John Muir Medical Center, Concord. “As a leading health care organization, we recently invested more than $800 million in our community through our two medical centers to provide a healing environment for patients, enhance patient care and safety and be adaptable to rapidly changing treatments and technology. We look forward to serving the needs of our patients for many years to come.”

According to U.S. News & World Report, the rankings showcase just 720 hospitals out of nearly 5,000 nationwide or about 14 percent. Each is ranked among the country’s top hospitals in at least one medical specialty and/or ranked among the best hospitals in its metro area. Hospitals were rated based on four elements: patient survival, patient safety, care-related factors such as nursing and patient services, and reputation.

The core mission of Best Hospitals is to help guide patients who need an especially high level of care because of a difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age. “These are referral centers where other hospitals send their sickest patients,” said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor. “Hospitals like these are ones you or those close to you should consider when the stakes are high.”

Between the two medical centers in Walnut Creek and Concord, John Muir Health has 892 licensed beds and, in 2010, more than 26,500 patients were discharged. John Muir Health also serves as the designated trauma center for Contra Costa County. In addition, the organization offers a network of more than 930 primary care and specialty physicians to care for patients.
