St. Joseph Health System President and CEO Deborah Proctor Named One of Top 25 Women in Healthcare for 2011 by Modern Heal

ORANGE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Deborah Proctor, president and CEO of St. Joseph Health System (SJHS), has been named to the 2011 “Top 25 Women in Healthcare” by Modern Healthcare magazine, a leading source of U.S. healthcare business and policy news, research and information. The biennial awards program highlights female executives whose work has led to significant improvements in the healthcare industry and its ability to care for patients.

Recognized among an elite group of women healthcare leaders, Proctor earned the award for her successful leadership and management of SJHS, a $4.6 billion, integrated Catholic healthcare delivery system sponsored by the St. Joseph Health Ministry. She was also selected based on her abilities to effect change in the industry, serve as a mentor and model for other female executives, willingly share with others in her field and take on a leadership role outside her organization.

“This is an honor to be recognized among such talented and gifted women whom I greatly admire and respect for the many meaningful contributions they are making to our nation’s healthcare industry,” said Proctor. “I’ve had the privilege to work in healthcare my entire career, and I am grateful and humbled to be mentioned in the same breath with these incredible leaders who dedicate themselves every day to the care and service of others.”

Proctor was selected for the award from among more than 320 nominations submitted to Modern Healthcare. The publication accepted nominees from all sectors of the industry, including hospitals, health systems, physician organizations, insurance companies, trade and professional groups, and the federal government.

At SJHS, Proctor oversees a system that includes a full range of care facilities of 14 acute care hospitals, home health agencies, hospice care, outpatient services, skilled nursing facilities, community clinics, and physician organizations throughout California, Texas and New Mexico. SJHS has more than 24,000 dedicated employees who strive daily to provide perfect care while building the healthiest communities and ensuring every encounter is sacred.

Proctor took the helm at SJHS in 2006, and since then has focused on enacting a three-pronged agenda that promotes a patient-centric focus of care, respect for others and healthy communities. She began her career as an intensive-care unit nurse and previously held leadership positions at Ascension Health in St. Louis and Voluntary Hospitals of America in Dallas.
