Most physicians think their office PCs are secure. However, many may be infected with computer viruses and spyware. The reasons are relatively straightforward: Access to most networks is not closely monitored. Employees are often free to install whatever programs they like in their spare time, and antivirus software at many practices is outdated. The problem, some security experts warn, may leave electronic medical records vulnerable to outsiders who able to hack basic security measures. That in turn may lead to HIPAA violations in the future.
