New entity will address the need for medical devices specifically designed or modified for pediatric use
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the University of Southern California (USC) have announced the creation of a new Center for Technology and Innovation in Pediatrics (CTIP).

“Since children differ from adults in their size, anatomy, body chemistry, and overall growth and development, there currently exists a need for novel medical devices specifically designed for them, as well as for the adaptation and validation of existing adult devices for pediatric use,” said Chester Koh, MD, director of the Robotic Surgery program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and co-director of CTIP.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has estimated that the development of pediatric medical devices lags behind the development of adult devices by 5 to 10 years. This delay is a result of economic, clinical, and regulatory challenges, as well as a lack of established mechanisms for joining pediatric device ideas with qualified individuals, programs and industry partners. To tackle this problem, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and USC are joining forces by uniting programs, institutes, faculty and students, along with industry and venture capital partners, in a topic-focused, systems-oriented approach.
CTIP will assemble this team of multidisciplinary stakeholders with the goal of:
- identifying and fostering innovative pediatric device projects
- connecting internal and external resources and people to support pediatric medical device development
- addressing current barriers to commercialization, and
- identifying academia’s role in alleviating these barriers, especially with regard to teaching and students.
