SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In a broad show of support for quality patient care and good jobs, healthcare workers and community members from throughout the Bay Area will hold a rally at the Sutter CPMC St. Luke’s Campus at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 25 to back members of the Service Employees International Union – United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW) in the upcoming union election at the facility.

The event marks the first day of a mail ballot election in which workers at Sutter Health’s California Pacific Medical Center campuses in San Francisco and Davies will vote either to stay in the 150,000 member SEIU-UHW or to join the small and failing National Union of Healthcare Workers (NUHW).
NUHW was created by former SEIU-UHW officials who were removed from office for misusing millions in union funds and violating members' democratic rights. In April 2010, a federal jury ordered NUHW and its leaders to pay a combined $1.57 million in damages to the members of SEIU-UHW.
A recent financial report filed by NUHW with the federal government (LM-2 for 2010) reveals that the organization is in deep trouble, owing $2.9 million in outstanding loans and debt, and is collecting virtually no dues. Most of the union’s high-level staff have left as the union’s troubles have mounted.
In all, about 140,000 of 146,000 members (more tan 96 percent) who were asked to switch to NUHW chose to stay in SEIU-UHW, and NUHW has failed to negotiate a single contract for the workers they represent.
