American Society of Nutrition Partners with Pri-Med on New Continuing Education Sessions

Entities Team Up to Educate Primary Care Clinicians on the Latest Evidence Behind Common—But Commonly Misunderstood—Topics in Clinical Nutrition

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- American Society for Nutrition (ASN), a non-profit organization dedicated to leading excellence in nutrition science and practice, is collaborating with Pri-Med, the leading provider of professional education solutions to a community of over 235,000 primary care clinicians, to help increase primary care physicians’ (PCPs) knowledge and understanding of the latest science and advances in nutrition-related topics in order to enhance patient care. ASN has joined with Pri-Med to offer Food, Nutrition & Health: Controversies and Clinical Issues, a group of continuing medical education sessions that will launch during pmiCME Updates day at Pri-Med Conference & Exhibition in Houston, TX, on March 26, 2011.

Primary care physicians’ interest in nutrition science is increasing, with 96% of PCPs citing the need for the nation's health care system to place more emphasis on nutrition to treat and manage chronic disease.1 However, despite the recognition that nutrition therapy can enhance and advance care, PCPs provide nutrition counseling only 30–42% of the time in non-acute visits,2 and cite lack of both training and knowledge as key barriers to routinely providing nutrition advice to patients. To meet the mounting need for education and training, the Pri-Med and ASN partnership will bridge together Pri-Med’s deep understanding of physician learning needs with American Society for Nutrition’s renowned faculty and access to the latest research in the area of medical nutrition.

“As our society moves toward a focus on disease prevention and maintaining good lifelong health, there is no doubt that a greater understanding of nutrition science will be increasingly vital for physicians practicing on the front lines of care,” said Alyce Kuklinski, MSN, RN, NP, Medical Director, pmiCME, the accredited division of M|C Holding Corp. “These sessions are unique in that they’ll weave together presentation of the latest evidence and research findings relative to issues often encountered in practice—for example, dietary salt restriction— with discussion and debate regarding if, when, and how these findings should be translated into actionable recommendations for various patients.”

The course topics and program content have been developed in collaboration with ASN and faculty along with pmiCME clinical staff. The 75-minute sessions will cover topics such as:

  • The safety of artificial sweeteners
  • Recommendations for dietary fiber intake
  • Dietary salt restriction: what is the evidence?
  • The use of dietary supplements in the geriatric patient

“Pri-Med’s experience in bringing engaging, relevant education to primary care physicians makes them a perfect match for the American Society for Nutrition, said Rob Russell, MD, President, American Society for Nutrition. “We are pleased to be collaborating with Pri-Med to reach a large audience of primary care physicians with high quality education that is accessible, convenient and will advance the application of nutrition science in primary care.”

The partnership with ASN is part of Pri-Med’s broader Pri-Med OpenSM initiative designed to advance innovation in professional medical education by collaborating with a range of organizations across the health care spectrum to provide effective education offerings that meets clinicians’ diverse learning needs and positively impacts patient care.
