SPOTLIGHT: Send in the "surgicalist"

While doctors were once wary of hospitalist physicians, today most are completely comfortable with the idea, working closely with the hospitalists to coordinate care. Now, some hospitals are trying on the idea of a "surgicalist" for size, assigning round-the-clock surgical care to staff physicians. Not only does this solution allow patients to be seen and operated on sooner, it also solves the problem of hospitals and groups having to pay increasingly large differentials to keep surgeons on call. What's more, physicians are happier, as they have more control of their schedule. Article
