Artificial intelligence (AI) is at the top of the healthcare buzzword list this year. As we head into a new year with endless potential, it’s time to find out where the rubber hits the road.
Healthcare, especially healthcare billing, is rife with inaccuracies. Just ask the 45% of working-age consumers who were erroneously billed last year. Even with all the advances in technology, medical bills still contain errors that can cause millions of dollars in incorrect payments a year.
In fact, most in the healthcare industry are still trying to understand if technology like AI can truly help. According to a survey of healthcare information management professionals by Black Book Research, 97% expressed fears that human oversight of medical billing will fall by the wayside. Another 94% said they’re unsure if AI can capture the nuances of medical coding.
The reality is that, if AI is used, human oversight and input are essential in any effort to improve medical billing and reduce errors. You can’t have one without the other.
Automating the initial stages of the claims review process can also significantly speed up claims analysis and accurate reimbursement. Rapid processing accelerates decision-making and frees teams up to focus on complex tasks that require nuanced understanding.
But here’s the catch: AI alone can’t fix the problems with the healthcare coding, billing and financial experience. It’s best used when supporting the experts, not replacing them.
More specifically, expert coders and clinicians, such as doctors, nurses and pharmacists, must provide oversight and validation of AI-generated results. This helps the technology's findings adhere to current healthcare regulations and policies and aids in maintaining quality and trust in automated processes. This collaborative approach enhances the accuracy of claims and helps identify cost-saving opportunities, while also teaching and training AI technology for future applications.
We need to reach a place in healthcare where claims are paid correctly the first time. Where we not only catch billing errors but also educate providers and their teams on the guidelines and policies that pertain to billing protocols. Simply denying claims without explanation doesn’t do anyone any good. That only fuels the problem.
AI offers an avenue for more efficiency and clarity. While leveraging AI alone can put payers at risk for missed billing errors, low-quality reviews or even auto-denying claims, leveraging both AI and clinicians can make an impact and support providers and members with thoroughly and efficiently reviewed claims.
Imagine a world where we can avoid costly rework and disputes. A world where relationships between payers and providers are strengthened and member satisfaction improves. If that sounds far-fetched, know that it isn’t. One small change can make a big impact. This is no different.
AI is a tool that can help us reduce the abrasion and frustrations in healthcare. Providers and payers really can live in harmony. But we need to use AI the right way to help us get there.
Using AI in healthcare claims is about so much more than adopting new technologies. This is about more efficiency, accuracy and trust in healthcare. As AI continues to evolve, its integration with human expertise will become more refined, leading to even greater efficiency in healthcare.
Adopting a collaborative model promises a more sustainable healthcare system where resources are used judiciously, and financial interactions are transparent and accurate.
