How CVS Caremark builds the next era of pharmacy benefits

Affordability remains the central challenge in pharmacy benefits, and CVS Caremark President Ed DeVaney sees biosimilars as the market’s largest near-term opportunity. In this interview with Fierce Healthcare conference producer Kelly Hogan, DeVaney explains how the playbook that accelerated generic adoption can now be applied to biosimilars, using scale and competition to help lower pharmaceutical costs for payers and members.

The conversation also examines how federal action could reshape the market. DeVaney discusses CVS Caremark’s approach to transparent pricing, reporting and consultative support for plan sponsors as requirements evolve. He also explains how investments in AI could simplify interactions for customers, members and colleagues while keeping attention on health outcomes and affordability.

Looking ahead, DeVaney expects affordability, transparency and member experience to remain the organization’s core priorities. Watch the full interview to hear his perspective on biosimilars, regulation, technology and the future of pharmacy benefits.
