Wellstar Health System laid off 761 workers yesterday “following a comprehensive review of our organization,” the Georgia nonprofit confirmed to Fierce Healthcare.
The cuts translate to roughly 2% of the organization’s 35,000-plus workforce and excluded any frontline care roles, Wellstar said. Rather, the layoffs “impact our corporate and shared services functions, as well as certain administrative roles within Wellstar Medical Group,” it said in the statement.
“These changes will help us simplify our structure, clarify roles, strengthen accountability and move decision making closer to the people who care for patients, while positioning Wellstar for continued long-term sustainable growth,” Wellstar said in its confirmation statement. “Our mission has not changed, and our patients will continue to receive the same compassionate, high-quality care they expect from Wellstar.”
Wellstar told Fierce Healthcare that affected employees are receiving several and other unspecified separation resources. The organization also noted that the impact of the cuts will differ by department, and that its decision-making follows analysis of relevant industry benchmarks.
Wellstar spans 11 hospitals with over 2,700 licensed beds, plus hundreds of medical offices and other outpatient care sites.
It reported over $7.3 billion in total operating revenue and a $307.4 million operating income (4.4% operating margin) during the 2025 fiscal year (ended June 30, 2025). Its most recent financial disclosure covering three quarters of the 2026 fiscal year suggest the organization’s operations are trending upward, with a $323.2 million operating income (5.6% operating margin).
That said, impending government funding cuts for hospitals stemming from policy changes plus expectations of continued macroeconomic pressures have many health systems reconsidering their operating structures, particularly in regard to their administrative teams.
This week’s layoffs also come as Wellstar grows its operations. Last month it shared news of a finalized acquisition agreement with northeast Georgia’s Mountain Lakes Medical Center, a 25-bed critical access hospital. That deal is slated to close Aug. 1 barring regulatory curveballs.
