UnitedHealthcare Wins ClearMark Awards for Consumer-Friendly Medicare Education Materials

  • UnitedHealthcare print and online resources help Medicare beneficiaries better understand their coverage and care options
  • ClearMark Awards celebrate documents and websites that succeed in communicating clearly

MINNETONKA, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement received three ClearMark Awards from the Center for Plain Language for its consumer-friendly Medicare education materials.

The ClearMark awards, according to the Center for Plain Language, honor the best in clear communication and plain language, celebrating documents and websites that succeed in communicating clearly. More information about the awards, including criteria and a full list of winners, is available at http://centerforplainlanguage.org/awards/clearmark2011/.

“The Center for Plain Language’s ClearMark awards reflect UnitedHealthcare’s commitment to developing plain-language materials that make complex health topics like Medicare easier to understand for the millions of beneficiaries we serve every day,” said Tom Paul, CEO of UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement. “Our clear, concise Medicare guides and other member materials enhance health literacy which, in turn, enables people to make better, more informed health care decisions. Better decisions contribute to better health outcomes.”

UnitedHealthcare received awards for the following print and electronic communications:

“UnitedHealthcare’s ClearMark winners show the company is dedicated to bringing clearer health insurance information to its customers. Its Medicare materials take a very complex government program and help make it simple for its readers. The Medicare video is particularly noteworthy – the judges considered it one of the best they'd seen – entertaining, easy to watch and understand, and just the right length,” said Annetta Cheek, Ph.D., chair, board of directors, Center for Plain Language.

UnitedHealth Group’s commitment to improving health literacy extends beyond the use of plain language for Medicare beneficiaries. United Health Foundation, a private, nonprofit foundation established by UnitedHealth Group, recently partnered with the National Education Association (NEA) Health Information Network to launch an online professional-development workshop for K-12 teachers designed to help them enhance their students’ abilities to make personally appropriate health and well-being decisions. The newly developed curriculum provides America’s teachers with an important tool to help increase students’ health literacy.

UnitedHealth Group’s commitment is also demonstrated by participation in the Institute of Medicine’s Roundtable on Health Literacy and by the presentation of three projects at the recent Institute for Healthcare Advancement’s Annual Health Literacy Conference.

According to the American Medical Association, “health literacy” – a basic understanding of the health information and services one needs to make appropriate health decisions – is “a stronger predictor of a person’s health than age, income, employment status, educational level and race.”
