Sheridan Healthcare, Inc., a hospital-based, multispecialty physician services company and the leading anesthesia services provider in the country, announced that Travis Lundell, a 2014 Master of Science in Anesthesia candidate from the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Medicine, is the winner of the Sheridan National Allied Health Scholarship for Anesthesiologist Assistant Students.

“We are pleased to award Travis with this year’s scholarship,” said Gilbert Drozdow, M.D., M.B.A., president of anesthesia services at Sheridan Healthcare. “He shows real promise and has the makings of an excellent leader. With the U.S. currently facing a shortage of anesthesiologists, and all allied health professions for that matter, it’s more important than ever that we support talented, hard-working students who are the future of our practice area.”

The $5,000 scholarship recognizes student anesthesiologist assistants, enrolled in a nationally accredited anesthesiology program, for exemplary clinical and leadership skills. Candidates are evaluated based on references, an essay on their decision to enter the anesthesiology field, and their extracurricular activities and involvement in various professional organizations.

Lundell demonstrated leadership both in his anesthesiology program as well as outside of the operating room. He completed clinical work last year at Kansas City’s Liberty Hospital, Saint Luke's Mid America Heart Institute and the Kansas City VA Medical Center. He was elected as his class’s AAAA Student Representative and appointed AAAA Student Committee Chair of Communications. He balances his training and extracurricular workload with his family life as well – he is married and the father of three children.

“It’s an honor to have been chosen for this year’s scholarship,” expressed Lundell. “I’m grateful for the generous assistance in completing my training and beginning my career in this exciting field.”

Sheridan’s Education Outreach Program Director Marissa Schimmel, along with Christa Hoffman, Chief of Allied Health at Memorial Regional Hospital South in Hollywood, Florida and Vice President of the Florida Academy of Anesthesiologist Assistants, presented Lundell with the award at the American Academy of Anesthesiologist Assistants (AAAA) conference in Orlando.

The National Allied Health Scholarship is made possible by Sheridan’s Education Outreach Program (EOP). EOP is a resource designed to assist allied health students, residents and fellows with their transition from training to practice. It offers five national scholarships yearly.

Established in 1953, Sheridan’s anesthesiology division now has more than 1,342 anesthesia providers in more than 138 programs in 17 states. Sheridan performs more than 800,000 procedures annually.

The application deadline for next year’s scholarship is January 15, 2014. For information on scholarship eligibility and to download an application, please visit .
