Jonathan Bush, CEO and Chairman of (NASDAQ: ATHN), a leading provider of cloud-based services for (), practice management and , heads to in Washington, D.C. next week to deliver a talk to the 1,800 leaders and thinkers in attendance about broken profit motives in health care, how innovation and change has been stunted, and to explore the prescription for tackling new frontiers.
In his presentation, Bush will share his belief that too many good people are doing bad things in health care today and making a profit in opposition to the market – patients – they serve. What’s needed, Bush asserts, is an open market for health care that will incent the “crazy ones” to bring their best ideas to health care and innovate in an industry that is still playing catch up with every other sector.
Bush said: “We are all about openness, connectivity and freeing information at athenahealth, and it is because of this coupled with my own personal experiences that I feel so passionate about discussing the lack of markets in health care. My plea to the TEDMED community is to create healthy competition in health care so that patients and providers have choice and can shop. By being able to shop, we not only join the rest of the 21 century, but we drive down costs and incent innovators to make health care work as it should. Health care as it exists today is not a reflection of our humanity and it needs to change.”
