Humana bringing onehome's value-based model to Virginia

Humana is bringing its onehome value-based care model to Virginia, the insurer announced Thursday.

The subsidiary offers a coordinated home health approach to Humana's Medicare Advantage members. The integrated model creates a single point of accountability that tracks the needs of patients, providers and health insurers, while care is offered by local providers.

Services onehome coordinates include infusion, nursing, physical therapy and durable medical equipment. Humana acquired onehome in 2021.

“There is a tremendous need for a care model that provides high quality, fully-integrated care in the home at reduced cost," Andrew Agwunobi, M.D., president of Humana's home solutions business, said in a statement. "Humana’s value-based approach aims to deliver on that promise and on our mission of bringing healing home.”

Humana has invested heavily in its home health services over the past several years, including its acquisition of Kindred at Home, as well as bringing onehome into the fold, which expanded its value-based home care reach. Humana is now the largest provider of home health in the country.

The insurer will initially launch onehome's model in Richmond, Roanoke and southern Virginia counties. Within several months, onehome will be available to Humana's MA members across the state and in North Carolina.

Humana said it is beginning with its own members for now but will transition to a payer agnostic model in the future, allowing members of other health plans to access onehome's services. With the expansion, Humana also expects to add about 220 employees in Virginia, bringing its total employment in the region to more than 2,000.

Human expects 50% of its MA members to have access to onehome's value-based model within five years.

“Onehome’s value-based approach relieves patients and physicians from the burden of dealing with multiple providers of home health services, including medication and equipment, which is the common experience for those currently navigating the extremely fragmented home health industry,” said Ramon Falero, CEO and co-founder of onehome, in a statement. “There’s a tremendous benefit for seniors in receiving better coordinated home care services that improve their health and their quality of life.”
