Tufts, Harvard Pilgrim lead NCQA rankings

Tufts Health Plan, Harvard Pilgrim and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Northwest are the highest ranked private insurers in the country, according to new ratings from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).

After examining almost 1,400 health plans for clinical performance, member satisfaction and accreditation survey results, NCQA determined that those top three insurers had the highest rankings for quality coverage for treatments and preventive services.

Tufts, in particular, scored high numbers for members' satisfaction with health plan services, including how it handles member claims. "Being recognized for offering the nation's top-ranked private and Medicaid health plans is tremendous recognition that reflects our unwavering commitment to providing affordable, high-quality health care coverage to our members no matter their age or life circumstance," Tufts CEO James Roosevelt Jr. said in a statement emailed to FierceHealthPayer.

Coming in at second, Harvard Pilgrim also ranked highly overall. Former Harvard Pilgrim CEO Charlie Baker said establishing a culture of service to help boost member satisfaction was one of the insurer's keys to success, FierceHealthPayer previously reported. But in the NCQA rankings, the Boston-based insurer didn't score well when it came to members getting care easily and quickly or how well its doctors communicate with each other.

Kaiser Foundation was the third highest-ranked insurer, continuing as an overall customer service leader in the industry. In March, Kaiser Foundation took the top spot in California for member satisfaction in a J.D. Power survey, FierceHealthPayer previously reported. However, in the NCQA rankings, it struggled with low member satisfaction scores on how their doctors coordinated care with other providers and not informing their members about illness prevention methods.

In other categories, NCQA found the three best Medicare plans to be all from the Kaiser Foundation--in Southern California, Northern California and the Northwest. And for Medicaid plans, NCQA three Massachusetts-based plans at the top--Network Health, Fallon Health and Neighborhood Health Plan.
