announced today that its largest health plans in California have received a 4.5-star rating by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) in nine of the ten California counties served by the plans. That high distinction makes SCAN one of the two highest-rated health plans in these counties.

The 4.5-star rating encompasses the majority of SCAN’s membership in both Northern and Southern California and includes most of SCAN’s “Classic” and “Options” plans as well as its Balance and Heart First Chronic Special Needs Plans.

The Star Rating System was established by CMS as part of an effort to help educate consumers on quality and make quality data more transparent and comparable between plans. Under the system CMS ranks health plans on a one- to five-star basis, weighing such factors as clinical outcomes, access to preventive services such as screenings and vaccines, managing chronic conditions, preventive care, and consumer satisfaction. Star ratings are calculated each year and may change from one year to the next. In its most recent satisfaction results, SCAN once again received 90 percent satisfaction from its members in California.

“When it comes to healthcare, there is nothing more important than quality care and treating individuals with the respect and dignity that they deserve,” said Chris Wing, president and CEO of SCAN Health Plan. “This high recognition by Medicare is a great testament to truly a team effort by all of our employees and provider partners and reaffirms our commitment to striving for – and sustaining – a five-star rating.”

Unlike most Medicare Advantage plans, SCAN has no commercial members. That allows the not-for-profit health plan to dedicate 100 percent of its energy and programs toward serving people with Medicare across the wide spectrum of aging. Its focus is to provide affordable and accessible quality healthcare to seniors and to continue to look for innovative ways to serve Medicare members’ healthcare needs.

For 35 years SCAN Health Plan has been focusing exclusively on the unique needs of seniors and others on Medicare. The company currently has more than 150,000 members in California and Arizona. Further information may be obtained at or on Facebook at .
