Kaiser Permanente's Medicare Plan in Mid-Atlantic States Receives the Highest Possible Rating in the Nation for the Second Straight Year

8th in the nation per NCQA Health Insurance Plan Rankings for Medicare

ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 16, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Kaiser Permanente has announced that its Medicare health plan in the Mid-Atlantic States has again received an overall rating of 5 stars, the highest rating possible from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for Medicare health plans (Parts C and D) across the country.

Through the Medicare Star Quality Ratings system, CMS assigns scores of 1 to 5 stars to Medicare plans based on more than 50 care and service quality measures across nine categories, including staying healthy, managing chronic conditions, member satisfaction, customer service, and pharmacy services.

This is the second year in a row that Kaiser Permanente's Mid-Atlantic States Medicare plan has received a 5-star rating, and it remains the only 5-star plan in the Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC.

"To earn the highest rating in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC, reflects the hard work and success of our physicians and care teams and their commitment to keeping our members healthy and active," said Kim Horn, president, Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States. "Their dedication combined with cutting-edge technology truly makes Kaiser Permanente a model for health care in this country."

The announcement follows the National Committee for Quality Assurance's assessment of the nation's health insurance plans which ranked Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States first in the region and 8th in the nation per NCQA Health Insurance Plan Rankings for Medicare.

"To receive 5 stars for quality is a great accomplishment and reflects Kaiser Permanente's commitment to achieving the best health outcomes for our members," said Bernadette Loftus, MD, associate executive director, The Permanente Medical Group. "Our integrated care combined with ground-breaking electronic health records allow our care teams to safely and efficiently keep our members healthy."

In addition to receiving high-quality service and satisfaction, 5-star excellence means that Medicare beneficiaries may enroll in a 5-star plan almost all year, from Dec. 8, 2013, to Nov. 30, 2014, without having to wait until the next annual enrollment period.
