CIGNA's Volunteer of the Year Honored for Commitment to Health of Older Adults

  • G.T. Sweeney volunteers with ArchCare, health care ministry of the Archdiocese of New York
  • Working with ArchCare, Sweeney serves older adults in New York communities
  • Being honored today for his service to the community by CIGNA President and CEO David Cordani

BLOOMFIELD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Today CIGNA (NYSE:CI) is honoring G.T. Sweeney, vice president of information technology, as the company’s Volunteer of the Year for his efforts to improve the health, well-being and sense of security of older adults in New York.

For the past 12 years, Sweeney has volunteered with ArchCare, a not-for-profit health care network that includes seven skilled nursing facilities, a home and community-based care program, a Medicare Advantage special needs managed care program, and an array of other programs and services for older adults, the chronically ill and disabled of the greater New York region.

“I have always been involved in community service and believe strongly in giving back,” said Sweeney. “I started visiting ArchCare nursing homes many years ago. I was touched by the warm welcome the residents gave – they really appreciated our visits – and inspired by the impact we had on them.”

Over the years, Sweeney has been central to many ArchCare initiatives. One of his most rewarding projects was helping to install a computer lab at the largest nursing facility and introducing many of the older residents to computers for the first time. In addition to working with those served by ArchCare, Sweeney currently serves on the organization’s Board of Trustees, a position he has held for 10 years.

“G.T. is a great example of what sets us at CIGNA apart. Not only is he helping people in the community, he is using the same skills and tools at ArchCare that he uses to help the people we serve at CIGNA,” said David Cordani, CIGNA president and CEO. “By acting on his passion to serve others, G.T. both appreciates and demonstrates our company mission, and he lives it all day, every day.”

Every year as part of its Community Caring Awards program, CIGNA recognizes an exemplary employee volunteer who is working to improve his or her community. As this year’s winner, G.T. will receive a $2,500 personal award for his dedication and ArchCare will receive a $5,000 donation from the CIGNA Foundation in recognition of his service to the organization. The CIGNA Volunteer of the Year is selected annually from a pool of 12 finalists -- Volunteers of the Month -- by the Points of Light Institute, an independent organization whose mission is to promote volunteerism among Americans.
