Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), virtually every individual is required to have minimum essential coverage by January 1, 2014. Individuals who do not have insurance by that date will be fined $95 per uninsured adult in the household (capped at $285 per household), or 1% of the household income above the regulatory filing threshold.
