mHealth capabilities will drive big use, consumer interest

Today's mHealth devices reflect just the beginning of what's to come for mobile and wearable medical devices, says John Patrick, M.D., a  former vice president of internet technology at IBM.

"The future is going to be much more significant in terms of the breadth of things that could be measured. It's not just steps--it could be cholesterol, the presence of an infection, your heart rate, or many different tests from bodily fluids that could be indicators for the actions within one's body," Patrick says in an interview with mHealth Intelligence.

Patrick attributes increasing consumer interest, as well as device innovation, as key drivers in mHealth. When it comes to app use, greater adoption will take place as consumers begin realizing the breadth and scope of healthcare-related issues they can track and test, such as a mobile EKG and measuring blood for cholesterol, he adds. Article
