AliveCor CEO: mHealth development demands regulatory oversight from Day 1

Mobile healthcare technology requires regulatory oversight and should not be approached as something to be made fast and fixed after it breaks, AliveCor CEO Vic Gundotra writes in a viewpoint at recode.

“It’s time that we stop viewing regulatory bodies as obstacles and start viewing them as valuable partners,” adds Gundotra, whose company makes solutions for mobile devices.  “What has been seen as a burden needs to be seen as a benefit. This is a mindset that should be adopted across a company’s entire team--from board to CEO to VC to developer.”

Gundotra is not alone in his opinion; many healthcare leaders have expressed similar sentiments, including American Medical Association CEO James L. Madara, M.D., who recently said it is time to stem the “digital dystopia” and eliminate “snake oil” in healthcare tech development

Gundotra notes that U.S. mHealth developers are "lucky to operate in a country that values quality of care enough to have agencies in place to keep standards high.”

He believes healthcare tech players must work as partners with regulators to keep those standards high and boost the value of digital health companies.

“If our industry can get this right, we have an opportunity to truly deliver on the promise of medical technology. The keys to it all are innovation, humility, patience and commitment. Does that sound like Silicon Valley? I believe it can,” he writes.
