Zephyr Technology, a global leader in real-time Physiological Status Monitoring (PSM) solutions, has developed a powerful new monitoring system for the mHealth market following a new round of investment in the company by 3M New Ventures, Motorola, Alsop Louie Partners and iGlobe partners.
Zephyr has partnered with NASA, the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Special Forces and researchers around the world to develop its physiological monitoring systems, which deliver a wide range of real-time, medical-grade physiological data wirelessly. Currently, Zephyr’s professional-grade products and technology are sold primarily in the Defense, First Responder, Research and professional and collegiate sports markets. Zephyr also produces a line of consumer-grade products for the sports and fitness market.

That kind of experience brings a mature insight into how mHealth technology is worn, deployed and used by medical professionals to bring true value.”
“With our systems, doctors, nurses and even family members will be able to constantly monitor a patient’s vital signs and ECG live – whether that patient is in a hospital ward, at home or in another state or country,” Russell said. “That’s going to dramatically increase the efficiencies of a hospital or medical practice, it’s going to improve patient care and it’s going to deliver significant cost savings to hospitals, doctors, patients and even insurance companies.”
Russell said Zephyr will unveil its new patient monitoring system and announce appointment of its Chief Medical Officer and Medical Advisory Board this fall.
Heading up Zephyr’s mHealth operations are Divisional Vice President Paul Costello, who has more than two decades of experience in the remote patient monitoring industry, and the equally seasoned Beth Andrews, Vice President for mHealth Corporate Development and New Market Commercialization.
Costello began his career in the mid-1980s with Compumed, an early developer of interpretive ECG systems, and Spacelabs, which produced the first medical system built on Microsoft Windows Technology. In the early 1990s, Costello pioneered remote monitoring with Instromedix, Inc. and later, as President of Heart Alert, won FDA over-the-counter clearance for the PHD (Personal Heart Device). Paul founded Intelecare, Inc., a Medicare-certified IDTF specializing in remote patient monitoring.
“Zephyr’s easily wearable sensors and flexible monitoring systems will mean that patients can be monitored from the moment they enter the hospital and throughout the care continuum without being tethered to bedside monitors,” Costello said. “Crucial data is collected continuously in a way that’s easy for the patient and for health care practitioners. This is a new paradigm for both for institutional and home care.”
Andrews brings more than 20 years of business development, strategy and sales experience in the finance, technology and medical device industries, with expertise in product concept development and commercialization of diverse technologies in nascent markets. Andrews’ has also held various leadership roles in healthcare initiatives to advance pediatric medical research. Before joining Zephyr, Andrews served as a manager of New Growth Platforms for Avery Dennison Medical Solutions and founder and board director of CureMito, an organization dedicated to developing innovative therapies for treating mitochondrial disease.
