The Omnibus Rule enforcement deadline is September 23, 2013. The Omnibus Rule modifies the HIPAA privacy, security and enforcement rules, and will be incorporated into the HHS/OCR HIPAA audit programs. Changes include modifications to the Breach Notification Rule that will require covered entities to evaluate the risk of compromise as opposed to the risk of harm, which is expected to increase breach reporting. Upon completion of the pilot program evaluation, the permanent audit program is expected to launch as early as October 1, 2013.
