Interactive patient systems streamline communication, boost satisfaction

Hospitals are pleased with the leading interactive patient systems (IPS) on the market, according to a new report from research firm KLAS.

Interactive patient systems are solutions that provide entertainment and education functions to a patient's in-room monitor. According to providers surveyed by KLAS, the top functions of IPS are patient education (95 percent), video on demand (79 percent), patient feedback (53 percent), video games (52 percent), Internet access (51 percent), requests for hospital services (51 percent), nurse communication (36 percent), and dietary requests (29 percent).

IPS can improve the quality of care by "shortening the patient-feedback loop and freeing clinicians from time-consuming distractions, allowing them to focus on patient care," the report says. In addition, nurses save time by not having to be present to educate patients or take patient requests.

Despite decreasing human contact, IPS is said to increase patient satisfaction scores, which Medicare soon will begin to factor into hospital reimbursement.

Fifty-five percent of IPS customers have connected IPS solutions to their ADT systems, and 36 percent to their electronic health records. Some hospitals allow physicians to order specific educational materials for patients from their EHRs.

Organizations' top goals for IPS, according to KLAS, are education (62 percent), patient satisfaction (33 percent), entertainment (25 percent), and freeing up nurse time (10 percent).

Of the major HIS vendors, only Siemens and Cerner offer IPS services. The top-ranked IPS solutions are GetWellNetwork's PatientLife System, Skylight ACCESS, LodgeNet Healthcare's LodgeNetRX, TeleHealth Services' TIGR Patient Education System, and TVR Communications' iCare TV.
