$18.9M for safety-net providers to tap EMRs, IT

Large multi-site community health centers and safety-net providers offer care for the nation's uninsured, underinsured and underserved populations. And now 25 of these facilities across 16 states will be able to adopt new EMR systems and other technologies thanks to $18.9 million in grants from the Health Resources and Services Administration, a division of HHS.

More than $14.3 million of the total will help 12 of the organizations implement EMRs. Ten projects also will adopt e-prescribing systems, HIEs, data warehouses, and other IT systems to link facilities to state immunization registries and hospitals, and will be funded with $3.8 million in grants. In addition, six grantees will receive about $700,000 to begin planning for other health IT projects.
