ZOLL Medical Corporation and GS Elektromedizinische Geraete G. Stemple GmbH, marketing defibrillators under the corpuls brand, announced today that they have concluded a licensing agreement allowing corpuls to incorporate ZOLL’s feedback technology into corpuls devices to help their customers improve CPR quality. corpuls customers will be able to receive real-time feedback while providing CPR, helping to ensure performance meets the recommended guidelines for depth, rate, release, and minimal interruptions. In addition, corpuls devices will be able to record CPR performance for post event review and debriefing of rescuers, important capabilities for quality assurance and quality improvements in resuscitation outcomes.

Quality CPR is an important aspect of successful resuscitation, and guidelines-compliant performance and skills have been shown to be difficult to maintain and ensure. The physical demands of providing quality CPR often result in rescuer fatigue and declining performance. ZOLL technology can detect all aspects of performance and provide real-time feedback to rescuers to help them maintain high-quality CPR over a rescue. Real CPR Help from ZOLL, in conjunction with other improvements in resuscitation practices, has been reported to improve resuscitation rates and long-term survival significantly in a number of published and presented studies. Two studies reporting on the use of the technology demonstrated a doubling and a tripling, respectively, of long-term survival*.

Jonathan A. Rennert, President of ZOLL, says, “We are pleased corpuls recognizes the importance of providing real-time CPR feedback to its customers via the superior technology that ZOLL has developed in this field. While we are competitors in some markets, both ZOLL and corpuls share a strong desire to help customers improve their overall resuscitation practices and feel that this common interest outweighs commercial advantages ZOLL would retain by not licensing this technology to other companies in the field of resuscitation.”

“corpuls is recognized for its technology and unique products in many markets and is a highly respected supplier of advanced defibrillation and monitoring devices,” he continued. “Laerdal is also a ZOLL licensee of Real CPR Help and we now welcome corpuls. It is clearly our intention to make this technology available to others when possible and have it become the standard in the industry.”

“We believe that ZOLL’s Real CPR Help technology is the best available means of helping customers improve their CPR quality and practices. Cooperation with ZOLL to incorporate this for our customers made perfect sense,” said Dr. Christian Klimmer, Managing Director of corpuls. “We expect to begin offering this technology to corpuls customers at the beginning of 2013. We are incorporating it into all devices we sell as a standard feature in view of its importance in improving resuscitation. Devices in the market can easily be upgraded with this new feature. We look forward to being able give corpuls’ customers more assistance in improving their CPR and welcome the cooperation with ZOLL.”

Real CPR Help provides real-time depth and rate compression feedback to rescuers as they deliver cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). It coaches rescuers to administer high-quality CPR with auditory and visual real-time feedback, guiding both professional and lay rescuers to the 2010 AHA/ERC Guidelines, which recommend a depth of at least 2 inches (5 cm) and a rate of 100 compressions per minute.

ZOLL introduced Real CPR Help five years before improving CPR quality became the cornerstone of the 2005 AHA/ERC Guidelines. It has been incorporated into virtually all ZOLL defibrillators since 2002—AEDs, BLS and ALS.
