LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The wireless communications system built into the new 317-bed Children’s Hospital Los Angeles pavilion that opened on July 17 now provides clinicians with maximum mobility and enables popular mobile devices such as iPhones and iPads to have better communications and information sharing.
The InnerWireless® broadband distributed antenna system (DAS) know as Horizon4GTM also aligns with the hospital’s goal for family-centered care and provides parents with an environment where they can be close to their children and directly involved in their child’s care. The new system offers full, glass-to-glass multi-carrier cellular and Wi-Fi capabilities from the basement throughout the building which will ideally make clinicians more accessible to the staff during the day.
Converging in-building wireless services onto a comprehensive wireless platform to support mobile real-time communication, enhance patient care and safety, and reduce costs has been a tremendous endeavor in the new 460,000-square-foot hospital.
Steve Garske, CIO of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, said InnerWireless enables the hospital’s unified communications strategy, which currently includes Aruba Wi-Fi and AT&T, Verizon and Sprint carrier services. Philips medical telemetry, RFID and more than 200 smart infusion pumps will be added to the wireless ecosystem later this year.
“We successfully converged our cellular and Wi-Fi services onto the InnerWireless system at the current facility. So it was a natural step to select the same system for the new facility,” Garske said. In addition, the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles IT group has developed a proprietary application that provides instant access to any of the hospital’s care providers via the wireless system.
“We’re developing a Wi-Fi application that will run on Apple’s iTouch, enabling nurse call and clinician communication everywhere inside the hospital,” Garske said. “Ultimately, we will also utilize the iTouch barcode feature at point of care, so that our staff can utilize a single device for communication, patient information and medical images. This is something we’re very excited about, and the more I talk with other CIOs about our experience, the more I believe they are interested in moving toward convergence like we have.”
