CISO and DBAs Unanimously Agree Upon AppSec Selection Citing Unparalleled Support of Database Security Lifecycle, Superior DB2 Technology and Personnel Expertise
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Application Security, Inc. (AppSec), the leading provider of database security, risk and compliance solutions (SRC) for the enterprise, today announced that after a thorough and stringent evaluation, Visiting Nurse Service of New York (VNSNY) has selected DbProtect as its database activity monitoring (DAM) platform. VNSNY selected AppSec’s DbProtect over other database security technologies including products from IBM (Guardium), Imperva, Oracle and Sentrigo.
The Visiting Nurse Service of New York is the largest not-for-profit home health care organization in the nation. In 2010, the organization provided 2,409,000 professional home visits covering everything from pre-natal to end-of-life care to more than 138,400 patients throughout New York City, Westchester and Nassau Counties.
With a massive database of sensitive electronic patient and employee information, VNSNY is constantly working to improve its IT security processes to ensure that it can continue to adapt its business to meet the needs of its clients while recognizing that the protection of the company’s millions of electronic patient and employee records is paramount.
“In our environment, the reality is that all of our critical data resides in the database,” said Larry Whiteside, Chief Information Security Officer, Visiting Nurse Service of New York. “We wanted to put in place a database security platform that would enable us to actively track all transactions that access that particular data, while not slowing database performance or inhibiting the functionality of the database.”
To that end, Larry Whiteside, along with the VNSNY database administrators, sought out the most flexible and comprehensive database activity monitoring solution available to suit the needs of their sophisticated infrastructure.
“After going through the process of thoroughly reviewing the vendors in the DAM marketplace, it became evident where certain vendors were lacking when it came to the completeness of their offerings as they map to an effective database security lifecycle,” said Whiteside.
VNSNY leveraged AppSec’s DbProtect DAM module (Audit & Threat Management), coupled with the Vulnerability Management module from the DbProtect platform to perform database vulnerability assessment functions. The solution locates, examines, reports on and fixes security holes and misconfigurations in any database within the environment. Whiteside sums up his vote to go with AppSec by stating, “AppSec was the only vendor that was able to show how effectively it could address transactional monitoring and vulnerability management in an integrated fashion.”
According to Whiteside, what pushed AppSec over the top in the selection process was the requirement of other members of the VNSNY evaluation team, the database administrators, who were concerned about any of the vendors’ ability to handle an often complex DB2 system. AppSec scored rave reviews from the DBA team as a result of the company’s unique technical acumen when it came to deploying the software across the often “complex” mainframe environment.
“AppSec brought with them not only the DbProtect technology that we specified to help achieve our database security and performance needs, but a team that had a demonstrated working knowledge of the DB2 environment,” said Larry Byrnes, Database Administrator, Visiting Nurse Service of New York. “The AppSec team very quickly instilled within our DBA group a tremendous level of comfort knowing that they clearly understood the nuances and complexities that are often times associated with DB2 mainframe systems.”
DbProtect enables organizations to achieve comprehensive security for sophisticated database infrastructures. DbProtect empowers organizations with complex, heterogeneous environments to scale enterprise-wide with the fastest time-to-value and lowest total cost of ownership.
From the very beginning of the evaluation process through purchase and deployment, Whiteside was adamant about ensuring that there would be no disconnect between his security efforts and that of the database administrators (DBAs). “I purposely got them involved in this,” Whiteside said. “Without their involvement, this project would be much more difficult. As a security officer, I work very diligently to ensure I have buy-in from all parties and am not trying to force something down anyone’s throat.”
Byrnes agreed, “Larry recognizes us as stakeholders that are responsible for the day to day care and feeding of the databases and we are given the ability to provide input on decisions that affect our environment. It was a collective team effort and after comparing our evaluation scorecards, we unanimously decided that AppSec’s DbProtect was the right fit for us not only from a technological perspective, but from a supporting personnel standpoint as well. AppSec had, by far, the most cohesive understanding of this tricky IT security and DBA world.”
