VHA Inc. to Offer 3M Solutions for ICD-10 Transition Planning and Reducing Readmission Risk

SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- VHA Inc., the national healthcare network, will offer 3M ICD-10 transition services and advanced 3M performance management software to its 1,400 hospital members, helping them successfully plan for ICD-10 and prepare for new Medicare regulations that reduce reimbursement for certain hospital readmissions. The 3M solutions will be available through an expanded purchasing agreement VHA has signed with 3M Health Information Systems.

VHA members can address ICD-10’s expanded documentation requirements and analyze the potential impact on reimbursement with 3M ICD-10 Assessment Services and 3M ICD-10 Claims Impact Analysis. The 3M ICD-10 Modeling and Code Translation Services will help VHA hospitals map, translate and convert systems from ICD-9 to ICD-10 well in advance of the October 2013 ICD-10 compliance deadline.

To help VHA facilities target areas for clinical performance improvement, 3M will offer 3M Potentially Preventable Complications (PPC) Grouping Software and 3M Potentially Preventable Readmission (PPR) Grouping Software, advanced patient classification systems that identify process and performance issues which can lead to avoidable post-admission complications or increased risk of patient readmissions.

“Beginning in October 2012, hospitals will face penalties for readmissions, whether patients are readmitted to the same facility or even to other facilities," said Sandeep Wadhwa, MD, Vice President Coding and Reimbursement, and Chief Medical Officer for 3M Health Information Systems. “Hospitals should begin now to analyze quality outcomes data to minimize financial risk under the new regulations, and to identify complications of care that can be avoided.”

VHA has a long-standing services agreement with 3M Health Information Systems. Other 3M products and services VHA offers to its members include the 3M Coding and Reimbursement System, the 3M Ambulatory Revenue Management Systems, and 3M Medical Necessity Dictionaries.

“We’ve enjoyed a valuable relationship with 3M over the years,” said Kerry Stark, senior director, Revenue Management Services for VHA. “Adding 3M’s ICD-10 transition services will help VHA members more efficiently prepare for the upcoming compliance date and maximize the probability of a successful conversion from ICD-9 that will help maximize their business processes.”

3M patient classification methodologies are used throughout health care to measure patient severity, risk of mortality, avoidable complications and readmission risk. More than 25 states rely on 3M classification systems, such as 3M APR DRGs, to analyze hospital quality or to determine reimbursement. Internationally, 3M has over 15 years experience in developing and maintaining ICD-10 products and services around the world. In the United States, under contract with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the National Center for Health Statistics, 3M developed the ICD-10 Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS).
