UnitedHealth Group Announces Top-Level Appointments to Legal Team

MINNETONKA, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) today announced three top level appointments in its legal team: Rich Baer will join the company as executive vice president and chief legal officer for UnitedHealth Group; Mitchell Zamoff will become executive vice president and chief legal officer for UnitedHealthcare, its health benefits business; and Christopher J. Walsh has been named to the position of executive vice president and chief legal officer for Optum, its health services business. Mr. Walsh and Mr. Zamoff will retain their current roles as executive vice president and general counsel for UnitedHealth Group. The appointments are effective May 31, 2011.

In his role, Mr. Baer will report to chief executive officer, Stephen J. Hemsley, and will be responsible for overseeing the company’s legal, regulatory and compliance matters. In addition to their current roles, Mr. Walsh and Mr. Zamoff will assume overall responsibility for legal operations within their respective businesses.

For the past decade, Mr. Baer served as general counsel for Qwest Communications International, Inc., and also as chief administrative officer since 2008. Prior to that, Mr. Baer was a partner at the Denver law firm Sherman and Howard and an associate at Rosenman & Colin, a New York law firm. Mr. Baer earned his Juris Doctor from Duke University and his Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia University.

Since January 2009, Mr. Zamoff and Mr. Walsh served as general counsels of UnitedHealth Group’s legal department. Prior to joining UnitedHealthcare, Mr. Zamoff was a partner at Hogan & Hartson and served as assistant U.S. Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice in Philadelphia. He earned his Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Arts degrees from the University of Virginia. Mr. Walsh joined UnitedHealth Group in August 2007. Previously, he was a partner at Hogan & Hartson and served as in-house counsel for a public company and a privately-held technology company. He began his career at the law firm Kirkland & Ellis and earned his Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Wyoming.
