Tufts, Harvard Pilgrim will not merge

After six weeks of due diligence, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Tufts Health Plan will not pursue a merger, the non-profits jointly announced Friday. The two health plans said it became clear that the savings and efficiencies they wanted would be more complex to achieve than initially expected and the integration of the two organizations would be more costly and time-consuming than anticipated. "As a result of this process, we have now determined that we are stronger as individual competitors than one company," said Harvard Pilgrim President and CEO Eric Schultz. Press Release
