Jonathan Puhl, Pharm D, Clinical Pharmacist, Georgetown University Hospital:

“We don’t just give our patients medication to prevent clots, we educate them on how to reduce their risk of a clot.”

Adam Wolk, MD, Georgetown University Hospital Anticoagulation Clinic:

“Blood thinners are great at preventing clots, but they are tricky to use properly. Patients need to be highly involved in their own care.”

Background

According to the US Surgeon General’s Call To Action to Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism:

  • Approximately 600,000 Americans develop a serious blood clot every year – and the number is going up. If you already had one clot, you are at risk the rest of your life.
  • 10-30% of patients die in the first month after diagnosis.
  • Nearly one in 20 Americans has an inherited tendency to develop clots.
  • Do you take long trips, especially by plane? Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) can often be prevented.
  • Nearly half of serious clots are not diagnosed promptly. Many are never diagnosed.
