Background
According to the US Surgeon General’s Call To Action to Prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism:
- Approximately 600,000 Americans develop a serious blood clot every year – and the number is going up. If you already had one clot, you are at risk the rest of your life.
- 10-30% of patients die in the first month after diagnosis.
- Nearly one in 20 Americans has an inherited tendency to develop clots.
- Do you take long trips, especially by plane? Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) can often be prevented.
- Nearly half of serious clots are not diagnosed promptly. Many are never diagnosed.
