Statement on HHS Partnership for Patients by Susan DeVore, President and CEO of the Premier Healthcare Alliance

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Members of the Premier healthcare alliance strongly support the Department of Health and Human Services’ recently announced Partnership for Patients. As we have learned through years of work leading quality improvement collaboratives, the best, most effective solutions are reached when broad groups of stakeholders work together to achieve a common goal. That is why we are confident that efforts to unite hospitals and other providers with government, employers, patient advocates and families will achieve measureable reductions in preventable infections and readmissions in healthcare.

For many years, members of the Premier healthcare alliance have been doing their part to protect patients and prevent dangerous and potentially lethal infections. Premier believes that hospitals’ infection prevention strategies should be comprehensive in nature and use new automated surveillance technologies to monitor healthcare-associated infection (HAI) rates. Hospitals participating in Premier’s QUEST®: High Performing Hospitals program are actively using such systems and preventing these types of infections through surveillance, benchmarking and sharing best practices proven to improve the quality of care. To date, these interventions saved more than 22,000 lives and $2.13 billion – real results that benefit patients, providers and payors alike.

At the same time, QUEST hospitals are working to reduce 30-day readmission rates, and further collaborative offerings from Premier will be introduced in the coming weeks to help hospitals achieve the reduction goals set forward by HHS.

Gaps in healthcare quality and safety carry a heavy cost, both in dollars and lives. Premier and our many of our member hospitals plan to sign the patient safety pledge and begin working together to achieve the goals. We look forward to working with Congress and the administration on additional national strategies that will be most effective in improving both quality and costs in healthcare.
