Simpler Consulting to Host Lean Design Workshop at IHI Annual National Forum

Attendees Will Learn How to Implement Lean to Transform Healthcare Design Projects

PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Simpler Consulting, L.P., a leading global management consulting firm, today announced it will host a workshop on lean healthcare design at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) 22nd Annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care on Sunday, December 5 at the World Center Marriott Resort & Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.

Steve Matteson, vice president and general manager of client services, and Kurt Knoth, director of business development, of Simpler HealthcareSM will present “Lean Design: The New Use for Lean in Healthcare” at a Learning Lab session to be held from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. in Grand Ballroom Salon 8B of the convention center. The workshop will discuss how healthcare providers can successfully implement lean design to cut costs and maximize hospital’s capital expenditures. Simpler Consulting works with more than 85 healthcare provider networks around the world to cut costs and improve patient care.

There is growing need for healthcare organizations to adapt methodologies that enable construction projects to be completed more efficiently. According to the American Institute of Architects (AIA) semi-annual Consensus Construction Forecast, healthcare construction spending is expected to decrease 6.5 percent in 2010.

“Healthcare systems must actively manage the performance of their capital spending so they can identify opportunities to reduce costs and save money,” said Matteson. “With capital funds being restricted, hospitals need to complete design projects with less funds and provide the greatest possible payback. Lean design not only improves the efficiency of the project, but also improves quality of care, patient safety and staff morale.”

Lean healthcare design incorporates a collection of lean tools and techniques to provide design projects the ability to meet the hospital leadership’s goals and expectations. Lean ensures the designs include the patient and caregiver’s needs as well as the most efficient use of space, equipment, time, information and people. All performance aspects are considered so that large- and small-scale design projects – such as a new hospital, a new wing/tower, a new clinic or a re-model of a floor or department – are designed with lean fundamentals.

As part of the workshop, Simpler Consulting client Denver Health will present on its successful use of lean management to transform its Park Hill Clinic from a temporary modular space to a state-of-the-art clinic in 2009.

“With Simpler Consulting we designed an efficient, waste-free, confidential registration and examination process that allowed optimal flow throughout the facility,” said Nancy McDonald, lean facilitator, Denver Health. “Ultimately, this improved the patient’s experience by reducing waiting room time, minimizing repeat paper work and controlling costs.”
