Shands Healthcare Implementing Rothman Index

GAINESVILLE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Shands Healthcare of the University of Florida has selected the Rothman Index solution for addressing improvements in the quality and cost of patient care at its Gainesville and Jacksonville campuses.

At Shands at the University of Florida, Hospitalists will leverage the Rothman Index to increase continuity of care. By visualizing overall patient condition throughout the course of a patient’s stay, hospitalists will more efficiently monitor patients throughout shift changes. “Maintaining continuity is extremely important for patient care,” said Kari Cassel, UF & Shands Chief Information Officer. “With the Rothman Index we hope to facilitate communication, narrow the continuity of care gap and lower risk for patients as they move from caregiver to caregiver.”

At Shands Jacksonville the Rothman Index will be put to use throughout the entire hospital. Randy Harmatz, chief quality officer for UF & Shands, said caregivers are looking forward to using the Rothman Index. “Rothman Healthcare has shown a correlation between likelihood of readmission and the final value of the Rothman Index at discharge. Using the Rothman Index we expect to reduce unnecessary 30-day readmission rates, improve our quality of care and reduce costs.”

“First and foremost, the Rothman Index will potentially enhance patient safety and efficacy of care by continuously providing an objective measure of the overall physiologic state of every patient entrusted to our care. In light of evolving government regulations and expectations regarding electronic health record function and meaningful use, the Rothman Index will become increasingly important for quality and outcome assessment, as well as research," remarked Dr. Joseph Tepas, a professor of surgery and pediatrics with the UF College of Medicine. “We are very excited, as part of this relationship, to join a consortium of leading pediatric institutions including the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and Yale New Haven in assisting in the development of a pediatric version of the Rothman Index tool to enable similar surveillance and earlier interventions for children.”

“We’re honored to have been selected by Shands Healthcare,” said Jameson Thottam, Executive Vice President of Corporate Development. “Shands is a prestigious and innovative healthcare organization that understands, in this highly competitive healthcare arena, strategic patient engagement and pro-active management will prove not only to be a market differentiator but also a significant savings to the bottom line. Providing a rich, integrated means of visualizing patient condition is essential to driving improved outcomes, reduced costs, and better communication across the continuum of care.”
