Resurrection Health Care Achieves 94% Field Data Extraction with Brainware Distiller for Invoices

Provider Reduces Paper-Based Document Processing by 77%, Eliminates Long-Term Paper Storage

ASHBURN, Va., Dec. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Brainware, Inc. is proud to report that Resurrection Health Care, which recently completed a merger with Provena Health to become the largest Catholic health care system in Illinois, has successfully implemented Brainware Distiller on Microsoft SQL Server for the efficient processing of accounts payable documents into a McKesson ERP.  The provider is achieving field extraction rates of 94% on PO-based invoices, and has reduced paper-based processing from 87% to 10% in 2011.  Resurrection selected Distiller following a rigorous evaluation that included competitive offerings from Kofax and EMC Captiva.

"Healthcare reform legislation has called for a consolidation of hospital systems, upgraded IT infrastructures and the implementation of new technologies that relieve the administrative burdens placed on operational management and staff," said Robert Banwart, Director of Accounts Payable at Resurrection Health Care.  "We rejected e-invoicing because it could never provide a comprehensive solution, and outsourcing posed substantial long-term cost burdens.  OCR-based data capture was therefore deemed most promising, and Brainware was the only vendor with a demonstrable capability for processing transactions in a touchless fashion."

Banwart also spoke to the heightened level of process visibility achieved with Brainware.  "In addition to transforming the routine for processing invoices, expense reports and other document types from 'data entry and paper handling' to 'analysis and exception handling,' the software provides a vastly improved audit trail, as well as a consistent method for discrepancy resolution," he added.  "Furthermore, Brainware's specialists brought a level of experience that enabled us to better align the application with our long-term business objectives; the implementation process even helped to uncover weaknesses in our prior routines."

Banwart noted that Brainware's offering for enterprise search, Brainware Globalbrain, was helping his department to quickly retrieve previously scanned documents and review all physician payments.  By creating a scalable, searchable archive for structured and unstructured data, Resurrection is able to convert its documents into electronic images, negating the need to physically store seven years' worth of paper files.

"Faced with the seismic changes inherent to federal healthcare reform legislation, providers like Resurrection Health Care seek compelling technologies that streamline outdated, labor-intensive processes," said Carl E. Mergele, Chief Executive Officer at Brainware.  "Brainware's applications stand alone in their ability to capture field and line item data right out of the box, scale to increasing volumes and provide a platform for automating multiple processes, enabling providers to divert valuable resources out of the back office and into treatment and research."

"Because these (intelligent data capture) systems can completely eliminate the need for manual touch for a large percentage of an organization's invoices, the organization can substantially reduce staffing required and the ROI is an order of magnitude higher," said Melissa Webster, Vice President at IDC.  "Unlike EDI or e-invoicing, they do not require suppliers to make changes to their internal systems or the way they do business."
