Preparing for a Job in Healthcare

MISSION, KS--(Marketwire - 07/18/11) - (Family Features) Whether you're a student looking for a career path or a veteran of the workforce looking to make a change, the healthcare industry has a lot of job options.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), ten of the 20 fastest growing occupations are healthcare related. Healthcare is expected to generate 3.2 million new jobs by 2018. And they're not just for doctors.

While diagnosing treating practitioners need high levels of education, most healthcare workers have jobs that require fewer than four years of college. In fact, according to the BLS, 47 percent of workers in nursing and residential care facilities have a high school diploma or less, as do 20 percent of workers in hospitals. There are some very good healthcare training programs that cover a wide variety of healthcare occupations such as medical assistants, technicians, therapists, nurses, administrative support and more.

Here are some health careers to consider:

  • Pharmacy Technology - Pharmacy techs work under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist to prepare prescription medicines, offer customer service and provide administrative assistance.
  • Massage Therapy - As part of the complementary and alternative medicine field, massage therapists use their interpersonal skills and training to help people reduce stress, prevent injury and enhance their quality of life.
  • Medical Billing and Coding - Assist with the timely gathering of accurate data on procedures, chronic and contagious diseases in order to help other patients and medical research.
