The Piedmont Clinic Implements Recombinant Solution for Clinical Integration and Quality Improvement Initiative

NEWTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Recombinant Data Corp., a healthcare data warehousing and clinical intelligence solutions provider, today announced that it has implemented a quality management data warehouse and reporting application for the Piedmont Clinic based on Recombinant’s Data Trust and Report Central products. The solution, locally known as the Clinical Integration Trust (CIT), resolved data management complexities, achieved compliance with HIPAA privacy laws, and enabled the automatic collection of information from 120 physician-member practices each with independent practice management billing packages and bill-coding processes.

“We selected Recombinant because they offered the flexibility and track record necessary to support Piedmont’s needs,” said Ronnie Brownsworth, M.D., CEO, Piedmont Clinic. “Recombinant delivered for us by going live after an eight-month project with the necessary compliance date of January 1, 2010. The CIT is central to our efforts to become an Accountable Care Organization, deploy a Health Information Exchange (HIE), and achieve meaningful use of our electronic health records. Most importantly, we will fill major gaps of information to enhance patient safety and health.”

The CIT supports the Piedmont Clinic’s further enhancements to ensure that higher standards of care are established through a systematic approach to patient care, quality improvement, and data-sharing across healthcare providers. The CIT incorporated several types of quality measures into one consolidated dashboard. Data includes patient satisfaction from Press Ganey, Joint Commission Core Measures from Thomson Reuters, EMR data from NextGen, cost accounting from Eclipsys EPSi, Cedaron’s Dexter cardiac registry, and PQRI measures utilizing CPT II coding in billing data files across multiple practice management systems.

The key novel component within the combined solution was the creation of a HIPAA-compliant clinical data capture agent to securely collect billing data from 120 independent physician practices. The new agent software operates at local practices and automatically transmits encrypted copies of claim submissions sent to payers to the CIT. Diverse billing data file formats from a wide range of practice management systems were standardized and processed through Recombinant’s data quality controls to ensure consistently usable, meaningful data within the CIT.

“Clients often think of extracting data from large systems such as Epic when Recombinant delivers data warehouses, but the more complex projects often involve less standardized data systems,” said Peter Emerson, CEO, Recombinant Data Corp. “Integrated care requires an aggregation of entire communities of physicians treating patients. Recombinant’s Clinical Data Capture Agents enable health systems to connect independent physicians, often where communications about patients are the most poorly integrated.”
