Physician-owned clinics target retail space

Urgent care clinics continue to experience rising popularity as a growing number of consumers are turning to clinics strategically located in retail environments. Physician-led start-ups like LiveWell and QuickHealth are now challenging ventures like MinuteClinics established in chains like Target and Wal-Mart that rely on nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

"People inside the medical community, they call us Doc-in-a-Box," comments David Mandelkern, CEO of Bay area-based QuickHealth, "They can call it whatever they want. What we do is we demystify the experience of the doctor being cloaked in a white lab coat and the patient not knowing the prices."
