Overlake First in Seattle Area to Introduce New Website Feature Displaying Emergency Department Wait Times

Patient convenience greatly increased by Overlake’s innovative new web feature

BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Starting today, Overlake Hospital Medical Center will display its Emergency Department (ED) wait times on its website. Overlake is the first healthcare facility in the Seattle area to implement this feature.

“We’re very pleased to provide our patients with the comfort and peace-of-mind that comes from knowing what to expect when they arrive in our Emergency Department, where generally there is little or no waiting,” said Stephen W. Marshall, MD, medical director of Overlake’s Emergency and Trauma Center. “Overlake continues to act as the leader in the Puget Sound area in progressive technology implementation, ultimately leading to more convenience for our patients.”

The ED wait times can be easily accessed using a computer, smart phone or any web-enabled device. Smart phone users have two different ways they can view Overlake’s ED wait times: One way is through Overlake’s mobile-optimized website – the only healthcare website in the Puget Sound region that is optimized for viewing on mobile devices. Another way is through the iTriage® smart phone application. Users of iTriage, a free app developed by Healthagen® and available from Apple’s app store or the Android Market, have quick access to a broad range of medical and facilities information in addition to Overlake’s ED wait times. Overlake announced a partnership with Healthagen last January.

Wait times for Overlake's Emergency and Trauma Center are calculated based on the time it takes from a patient’s arrival in the ED until the patient is seen by a triage nurse. The wait times are updated in real time.

Posting wait times not only serves as a convenience to patients but is also a natural extension of Overlake’s culture of transparency. “We post quality scores, patient satisfaction scores and other data on our website and throughout the hospital,” said Dr. Marshall. “It’s a natural step for us to post our Emergency Department wait times as well.”
