Outcomes Achieved with MIQS Software Recognized by Health Affairs Article

Results achieved using MIQS software recognized in a paper co-authored by the National Coordinator for Health Care Technology, David Blumenthal, M.D.

BOULDER, Colo., March 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- MIQS has been recognized in a paper on the benefits of Health Information Technology published in the journal Health Affairs(1) analyzing more than 150 publications on Health Information Technology to determine its effect on outcomes, particularly quality and efficiency.

Of these, only 14 publications assessed both quality and efficiency outcomes. They cited particularly one study of three New York City dialysis centers that reported that "patient mortality and nurse staffing levels decreased by as much as 48 percent and 25 percent, respectively, in a three-year period" after implementing MIQS's unique electronic health record software Disease Manager Plus™.

Disease Manager Plus focuses on chronic disease where the U.S. spends 75% of our $2 trillion annual health bill and where information technology can make the greatest impact both medically and financially. Victor Pollak, M.D., a chronic disease expert, notes that these patients need continuous lifetime medical care from many caregivers in many places. All need to access the patients' entire records. Driven by Sybase® ASE, the software suite manages both clinical and business processes in caring for patients with kidney disease, diabetes, dialysis and transplantation. Today, used by thousands of caregivers in hundreds of care locations in the U.S. and internationally, it maintains complete, digitally coded, analyzable lifetime patient medical histories, immediately available anytime anywhere. It connects treatments and outcomes at the point-of-care and enables continuous improvement with built-in analysis and decision support.

Only MIQS has proven, in two peer-reviewed publications(2, 3), the ability of a correctly modeled EMR to meaningfully improve health outcomes in chronic disease. In one 9-year study representing some 4,000 patient years, use of Disease Manager Plus decreased mortality by almost 40% when used by physicians to help manage chronic kidney disease patients treated by dialysis - and with 25% fewer staff than the average U.S. dialysis unit(2). Only MIQS' unique medical record model has been able to document improvements such as these.

George Rovegno, CEO of MIQS said: "We not only need to employ the power of modern IT in healthcare, we need to use it in the right EMR model to reap the benefits of technology to improve the health of our citizens, especially if we want to address chronic disease adequately. We are pleased we have been able to succeed in applying technology to improve the lives of others."
