Michigan's largest hospitals go on 2011 hiring spree

Eight major hospital systems in Michigan plan to hire about 14,000 people this year, reports the Detroit Free Press. And nearly 3 percent to 5 percent of those jobs are new, including positions in information technology, medical billing and technical assistance.

This hiring spree coincides with a forecast by the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth, which expects healthcare to dominate every other occupation field for job growth in the next seven years. The agency anticipates home health aides will see the highest boost, with a 44.4 percent increase in jobs by 2018.

Demand for nurses is also strong in Michigan, where practically all of the hospital systems have openings for nurses and related care positions. For example, Oakwood Healthcare of Dearborn, expects to hire up to 312 nurses and advanced practice staff out of some 1,300 new hires in 2011, spokeswoman Paula Rivera-Kerr told the Free Press.

As one of the eight major hospitals holding a hiring spree this year, Henry Ford Health System will post more than 3,500 openings. The hospital system is particularly looking for pharmacists, surgical technologists, medical lab technologists and radiographers. Beaumont Hospitals in Royal Oak plans to add about 1,800 people, including medical coders and documentation specialists with knowledge of medical billing issues, audits and document reviews, notes the Free Press.

And health careers aren't thriving just in Michigan. Nationwide private sector healthcare employment has risen to an all-time high of 10.7 percent of total employment, notes FierceHealthFinance.
