MedSharps® Wins Environmental Management Services Contract for Two Veterans Affairs Health Care Systems

Local, veteran-owned company will serve 15 facilities throughout the South Texas and Valley Coastal Bend Veterans Health Care Systems

SCHERTZ, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- MedSharps®, a division of Schertz-based Marshall Shredding Company, now provides environmental management services for the South Texas Veterans Health Care System and Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System Facilities. Medsharps is a Service Connected Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), and will conduct regulated medical waste removal, sharps container treatment and recycling, and final disposal services for the 15 VA facilities in both systems through October 2011. The contract award is $206,000 annually and is renewable for up to five years.

“We appreciate that the VA recognizes our exceptional service and certification as a SDVOSB in awarding this contract,” says Bill Jewett, CEO. “This fits right in with our strategic mission as we expand our federal presence and continue to grow at the local and state levels.”

A U.S. Naval Academy graduate, and a disabled veteran from Iraq and Operation Enduring Freedom – Philippines, Jewett served as a LCDR in the U.S. Navy’s elite Special Forces, SEAL Teams and was awarded a Bronze Star for his heroic actions in the Iraq War.

MedSharps is one of only two companies in Texas that offers an FDA-approved reusable sharps program and the only company in South Texas region that can process reusable sharps materials locally. This is a critical distinction, due to the risk of exposure as more people handle the material and it travels farther to be processed. The company can ensure the highest level of safety while redefining the industry standard of service because MedSharps can manage the entire process regionally – including collection, transport, treatment, return – from start to finish.

MedSharps will treat about 500 reusable sharps containers each week under this VA contract alone, amounting to several thousand pounds of medical waste each month.

The reusable sharps system is the most environmentally friendly option available because it features reusable sharps containers that can be used up to 156 times each, keeping thousands of pounds of plastic out of landfills. It’s also exceptionally safe, allowing health care facilities to significantly minimize needle sticks for their staff, and eliminating the potential costs to manage exposed health care workers.

MedSharps also uses a barcode system to track every container leaving and entering a system along with an automated industrial wash system with random swab tests to ensure all containers are free from bacterial and viral infection elements. An automated tipper system ensures human hands don’t come into contact with potentially infectious material.

MedSharps is fully compliant with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and Department of Transportation (DOT) standards, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations regarding medical waste transport and treatment.

Its parent company, Marshall Shredding is also one of the few shredding companies in Texas to be rated AAA Certified by the National Association of Information Destruction. Additionally, MedSharps/Marshall Shredding is the only company in the state of Texas that has combined the regulated waste streams, medical waste and document destruction for a health care facility. No other company in the state owns the medical waste treatment capability, reusable sharps capability and AAA NAID certification for “on-site” document destruction.
