Medicaid expansion to include older, sicker patients

When CountyCare expands Medicaid to all Cook County, Ill., residents in January, newly eligible patients likely will be older and sicker than the broader population, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Since most of these patients have ignored their health over the years, they have a higher chance of suffering from multiple chronic conditions. "What I'm hearing from my providers so far is that many of the patients we're getting are truly complex, because they have had such a pent-up demand and they've not been in consistent health care," Donna Thompson, CEO of Access Community Health Network, a Cook County Health & Hospital System partner with CountyCare, told the newspaper.
