MD hospital costs up in '06, but less than elsewhere

The price of an average hospital stay in Maryland rose $500 during fiscal 2006, to $9,440, according to a new report from the state's Health Services Cost Review Commission. That's a not-insignificant 5.4 percent increase, but it's actually lower than the national price increase of 6.4 percent during the same period.

This result reflects well on the Commission, which was established in 1971 to keep cost increases below national averages. However, hospitals in Maryland aren't happy with the increase, which had to be approved by the commission. They'd wanted to have more cash to pay for a planned $6 billion in capital improvements scheduled to take place through 2010.
