Maimonides Medical Center Implements Allscripts Care Management Solution

Web-based application automates and streamlines care processes, liberating case managers from time-consuming paper forms

CHICAGO and BROOKLYN, N.Y., June 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Allscripts (Nasdaq: MDRX) today announced that Maimonides Medical Center, the premier academic medical center in Brooklyn, has adopted the Allscripts Care Management solution to increase the efficiency of utilization management and discharge planning and improve the coordination of care. Maimonides, which also uses the Allscripts Emergency Department (ED) solution, implemented the web-based care management application in less than four months and has been using it since the end of March.

Maimonides selected Allscripts Care Management because it combines what the hospital regards as the top programs for utilization management and discharge planning. In addition, the hospital liked the way the software automates every part of the care management process. Maimonides also appreciated Allscripts commitment to connecting its ED and Care Management systems, which will give case managers easy access to clinical information needed to provide better patient care as well as to reduce potential denials of payment by insurers.

"The feature that the staff loves most about Allscripts Care Management is having all of the necessary forms online," said Madeline Rivera, Vice President for Care Management for Maimonides. "In the past, they would have had to look at a paper chart to get the information and would have jotted it down on a form. When discharging patients to skilled nursing facilities, those forms might have been twenty-five pages long. Now these forms and the home care forms are online, and the demographic information is populated from our IS system. All the case managers have to do is fill in medical information and send the form from their computers."

Another immediate win, Rivera pointed out, is the elimination of hard-copy case reviews, which the nurses previously had to pick up in a building that's separate from the main hospital. Now they can go directly to their units and open up the Allscripts Care Management solution to update the reviews, saving time and reducing manual work.

Easier access to information also facilitates concurrent reviews. If a health plan says it never received a document, for instance, the case manager can go into Allscripts audit management and find out exactly when that document was sent and by whom.

Discharge planning is also much easier with the Allscripts solution. Now that Maimonides can send electronic requests for skilled nursing facilities and home care placement to multiple providers simultaneously, the providers are responding more quickly. "It's creating a little bit of healthy competition because now they know we're on Allscripts," said Rivera.

Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts, commented, "As the financial challenges grow for many US hospitals, they are under pressure to increase patient throughput while still providing high-quality care. The decision of Maimonides Medical Center, a national leader in healthcare, to automate care management will help achieve both of these goals while streamlining the care process and enabling their care managers to spend more time with patients. Maimonides is also ahead of the curve in utilizing our ability to connect information across virtually every care setting, including the Emergency Department and care management, for improved efficiency and ultimately better health outcomes for patients."
