Krames StayWell to Implement Direct Project Security Protocols in Collaboration with Microsoft HealthVault

Encrypted e-Mail Platform for Krames On-Demand will facilitate Consumer Engagement in National Health Information Network

YARDLEY, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Krames StayWell has announced that it is enabling the ONC’s Direct Project messaging standards for its award-winning patient education system, Krames On-Demand. Leveraging the Direct Project encrypted e-mail functionality supported by Microsoft HealthVault, health systems will be utilizing Krames On-Demand to engage patients in their care by sending consumer-friendly education resources that can be stored in the patient’s personal HealthVault account. Patients can now have easy, 24/7 access to a repository of information created specifically for them, and in consideration of health literacy design principles, to better manage their health.

“Implementing Direct Project for Krames On-Demand is a win:win:win scenario,” explained Dave Bennett, Chief Technology Officer for Krames StayWell. “First, it is a winner for patients who can be confident that the patient education resources they desire electronically can be delivered in a secure fashion. It alleviates privacy fears allowing patients to focus their energies on taking care of themselves.

“Second, it is a winner for hospitals and eligible providers using Krames On-Demand, an ONC-ATCB Certified EHR module, who can be confident that proposed Stage 2 Meaningful Use requirements for secure online patient messaging will be supported.

“Finally, and this cannot be understated, the Direct Project encrypted e-mail program brings a focus on consumer needs into the development of the secure, interoperable Nationwide Health Information Network. Much of the activity we hear about is interoperability among providers. While this is critical, the Krames StayWell Company is committed to transforming healthcare communication via patient engagement. The Direct Project helps us meet our mission.”

“Engaging patients in managing their care – and establishing greater connections between patients and providers – are important goals behind HealthVault,” said Luisa Monge, director, Microsoft Health Solutions Group. “We’re excited that Krames StayWell is taking advantage of HealthVault and its support for the Direct Project messaging protocols to deliver education resources to patients.”

Krames StayWell plans to implement its first hospital client with the Direct Project encrypted e-mail from within Krames On-Demand later this summer. Work is also in development to incorporate the Direct Project protocols in other Krames StayWell applications ensuring security and interoperability across all touch points throughout the continuum of care.
