Kindred Healthcare Announces Development of Inpatient Rehabilitation Hospitals

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Kindred Healthcare, Inc. (“Kindred”) (NYSE:KND) today announced plans for a new inpatient rehabilitation hospital (“IRH”) in Houston, Texas, and the replacement of an existing IRH in Austin, Texas. Once completed, these projects will expand Kindred’s capacity to grow and provide a continuum of post-acute care in two key markets.

Houston, Texas

Kindred is building a 46-bed freestanding inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Humble, a northeastern suburb of Houston. The 56,000 square foot hospital is scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2012. The hospital will feature all private rooms and more than 6,600 square feet of therapy space, with rehabilitative technology, a therapy pool and programs for patients with complex physical and cognitive needs. The hospital’s programs will include care for patients suffering from stroke, brain injury, lower extremity amputation and spinal cord injury. This will be Kindred’s second IRH in the Houston market. In addition, Kindred currently operates 13 long-term acute care (“LTAC”) hospitals and, through its RehabCare division, one hospital-based acute rehabilitation unit in the Houston market.

Austin, Texas

Kindred has started construction on a freestanding IRH in partnership with Seton Healthcare Family. The 59,000 square foot hospital will have 50 beds. The new hospital will replace a 20-bed facility that Kindred currently operates within Seton Medical Center Austin a few blocks south of the new site. The new hospital will feature a therapy pool and specialized programs for patients with complex physical and cognitive needs. The new IRH is scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2012.

“The new location is designed to help our superb rehabilitation team maximize the abilities of people with a wide range of injuries and illnesses,” said Tom Gallagher, President and Chief Executive Officer of Seton Ventures and Alliances. “With so many advances taking place in neurosciences, we see much hope for significantly improving patient quality of life for what were once devastating conditions.” Seton is a member of Ascension Health, the largest not-for-profit health network in the nation.

“These inpatient rehabilitation hospitals are another example of our commitment to developing high quality, cost-effective healthcare services and providing a continuum of services that allows us to ‘Continue the Care’ for our patients and residents through an entire episode of treatment and recovery,” said Paul J. Diaz, President and Chief Executive Officer of Kindred.
