Kentucky Hospital Saves More Than $100,000 by Purchasing Liability Insurance Offered Through Premier Insurance Management

Murray-Calloway County Hospital benefits from Premier healthcare alliance discounts, performance improvement solutions

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Murray-Calloway County Hospital (MCCH) has saved more than $100,000 on its hospital professional liability insurance for the next year. The 152-bed, not-for-profit hospital based in Murray, Ky., achieved these savings because of special incentives negotiated by Premier Insurance Management Services Inc. (PIMS), a for-profit corporation wholly owned by the Premier healthcare alliance.

The incentives MCCH benefited from were through the hospital’s insurance carrier, Allied World Assurance Company (U.S.) Inc. (Allied World), for Premier alliance members that use its clinical quality and safety technologies.

“As a long-time Premier owner, we have benefitted greatly over the years by participating in Premier purchasing, informatics and insurance programs,” said Brad Bloemer, chief financial officer of MCCH. “We are absolutely thrilled by the latest savings. In this time of dwindling reimbursements and reform, we must look for every single opportunity for savings. Premier continues to impress us with the creative ways it brings value to hospitals our size.”

The hospital professional liability insurance program sponsored by PIMS targets community-based acute care hospitals in select states with 400 beds or fewer, including critical access and specialty hospitals, and that have a deductible or retention of up to $1 million. There is a 10 percent premium credit for Premier members, plus additional credits of up to 15 percent for members who use Premier's QualityAdvisor™ and/or SafetySurveillor® solutions. The credits resulted from Premier’s having demonstrated to Allied World the financial and safety advantages of hospitals using the two technologies either alone or in combination. Relationships with retail brokers are not disrupted by this offering.

“Bringing together quality products for the benefit of the Premier members is the purpose of an Allied World and Premier coordination,” said Allied World Healthcare Senior Vice President/Healthcare Practice Lead Cindy Oard. “Cost savings is just one of the advantages that can be gained. Coverage enhancements, risk consulting and the Premier clinical quality and safety products, help hospitals provide quality care with the best possible insurance protection.”

QualityAdvisor, part of Premier’s QualityConnect™ program, accesses the nation's largest comparative clinical database while integrating quality, safety and cost data. Premier members using the solution saved more than $284 million last year through reductions in readmissions, length of stay, complications and mortalities.

SafetySurveillor, an automated surveillance solution in Premier’s SafetyConnect™ program, helps providers avoid Medicare payment penalties and cut costs by working to reduce healthcare-associated infections. Hospitals can more effectively monitor their infection data using the technology.

Among PIMS’ offerings are contracted management services for American Excess Insurance Exchange, Risk Retention Group (AEIX) and enhanced sponsored programs with leading commercial insurers through a comprehensive portfolio of property, casualty and employee benefit products.
